Kids in Cox's Bazar: 8 things that actually work

We traveled with children aged 4, 7, and 10 and tested 15 activities to find the 8 that kept everyone happy.

What does not work

Most beach activities marketed to kids are either unsafe or boring. Parasailing operators do not use proper harnesses for children under 12. Jet ski rentals refuse passengers under 16. The amusement parks (Fantasy Kingdom and Shishu Park) have rusted rides and questionable maintenance; we saw a Ferris wheel breakdown mid-operation. The dolphin show at Marine World has three listless dolphins in a filthy tank; skip it entirely. Long hikes like Teknaf or Himchari waterfall are too hot and steep for young kids. Temple visits bore children unless they are genuinely interested in culture.

What does work: activities that involve animals, water, and mild adventure with shade breaks. The eight below kept our test group of three kids engaged for 2-4 hours each. All are accessible from Kolatoli or Laboni base, none require advanced planning, and all cost under $15 per family.

The 8 ranked

One: Dulahazara Safari Park, 50 km south. See Bengal tigers, elephants, crocodiles, and deer from a guided bus tour ($8 per family). The bus has bars so it feels adventurous but is totally safe. Pack snacks; the park cafe is grim. Two: Inani Beach tide pools at low tide. Kids love catching hermit crabs and chasing small fish. Bring buckets and nets from a toy shop ($2 total). Three: Sunrise or sunset beach walk hunting for shells. The stretch between Sugandha and Laboni yields cowries, sand dollars, and small conches. Four: Renting bicycles and riding Marine Drive promenade after 6 PM when it is closed to cars. Bike rentals $3/hour for three bikes.

Five: Himchari waterfall pool for a supervised swim. The water is shallow and cool, and monkeys in the trees entertain kids. Go early before crowds. Six: Boat ride on the Bakkhali River near Chakaria, $10 for a one-hour family charter. Mangrove tunnels, kingfishers, local fishing boats. Seven: Beach bonfire arranged through your hotel, $20 including firewood and setup. Roast marshmallows and tell stories; kids remember this more than any temple. Eight: The kite-flying beach vendors who sell cheap kites for $1 and teach kids to fly them. Best on windy afternoons at Laboni Beach.

Questions, answered

Is the food safe for Western kids?
Stick to cooked-to-order items at hotel restaurants: rice, grilled fish, chicken curry, naan. Avoid raw salads, ice cream from street vendors, and cut fruit. Bring rehydration salts in case of diarrhea, which hit one of our three kids despite precautions. Bottled water only, even for brushing teeth.
What is the ideal age range for Cox's Bazar?
Six to twelve is the sweet spot. Younger than six and the heat, crowds, and lack of playgrounds exhaust them. Older than twelve and they find the activities too tame. Teenagers need WiFi, which is patchy, and there is zero youth culture scene here.
