The read

The trip works or fails on where you sleep each night

Almost every disappointing Cox’s Bazar trip has the same cause: the wrong base, or too many bases. The district is long and thin — 120 kilometres of beach, with the attractions spread from Chakaria in the north to Teknaf in the far south — and the roads are slower than the map suggests. Getting the sleeping pattern right is most of the planning.

The rules that work. Sleep on the main strip (Kolatoli or Sugandha) for anything under four nights, because everything is a day trip from there and you can walk to dinner. Move at most once on a week-long trip. Never plan to be on the Marine Drive after dark. And put the long drive — Teknaf, or Inani and back — on a day when you start at seven.

The four plans below assume two adults, a moderate budget, and no car unless stated. All four are built from the same set of pieces: beach mornings, one inland or island half-day, one long coast-road day, and an evening pattern of sunset walk then grilled fish.

Two nights: the main beach, done properly

Base: Kolatoli or Sugandha, both nights. Day one: arrive, drop bags, walk the beach, eat grilled fish one block inland, and be on the sand for the sunset. Day two: up before six for the dawn walk and the fishing boats, then a half-day down the Marine Drive to Himchari for the viewpoint and, in the wet season, the waterfall — back by two for the heat, pool or shade, then the sunset and dinner. Morning three: one last beach hour and out.

What to skip on two nights: Teknaf, Kutubdia, Dulahazara and Sonadia. All need a full day or more and will make the trip feel like transport. Ramu at a push, if you are prepared to give up the Himchari morning for it.

Cost, two adults: $60 to $90 for rooms, $25 to $40 for food, $15 to $25 for transport including the Himchari trip. Around $120 to $150 all in, outside peak season.

Four nights: the sweet spot

Base: Kolatoli or Sugandha, all four nights — no moving. Day one: arrive, beach, sunset, fish dinner. Day two: dawn walk, then the full Marine Drive day — leave at seven, Himchari viewpoint, Rejukhal bridge, Inani by half past eight for empty sand and the rock pools at low tide, lunch at a resort kitchen, back by four. Day three: the inland or island morning — Ramu for the monastery and craft workshops, or the boat to Moheshkhali for the Adinath temple — back on the coast for lunch, Burmese Market in the evening. Day four: a slow beach day, the second dawn walk, a hotel pool at midday, and the sunset properly, from Sugandha where it is quiet.

This is the plan we would run, and it needs no car: CNGs cover Ramu and the jetty, and one hired car or motorbike covers the Marine Drive day. It sees the beach at three different points, gets one cultural half-day in, and never involves a rushed morning.

Cost, two adults: $130 to $190 rooms, $50 to $80 food, $45 to $75 transport. Roughly $230 to $330 all in, outside peak season.

A week, and the version with a car

Seven nights, one move. Nights one to four on the main strip, exactly as above, adding a second slow beach day and the shutki market. Then move south: two nights at Inani for the best sand and clearest water on the coast, walking south in the mornings and eating at the hotel because there is nowhere else. Final night either back on the strip for easy airport access, or in Teknaf if you are taking the St Martin’s ferry — in which case check the sailing rules within days of travelling, and build a spare day for weather.

With a car and driver for two of those days, add Teknaf as a full day from the strip (leave at seven, port at nine, back before dark), and Dulahazara Safari Park as a half-day north if you have children. A motorbike substitutes for the car on everything except the Teknaf run in the heat.

For the ambitious: Kutubdia is the one place in the district that genuinely needs two spare days and a tolerance for informal boats and poor rooms. Sonadia needs a chartered boat, a low tide and an interest in shorebirds. Neither belongs in a first trip.

Booking order, and the mistakes to avoid

Book in this order: dates (check the Eid calendar first — it moves, and it doubles prices), then the room, then the long-distance travel, then nothing else. Everything local is arranged the day before or on the morning. Do not pre-book excursions online at three times the local rate; hotel desks and the CNG drivers outside will do the same trip for a third of it.

The five common mistakes: booking Laboni and then complaining about the crowd; booking Inani or the Marine Drive without transport; planning to swim in the monsoon; arriving on a Friday, when the beach is at its fullest and rooms at their priciest; and trying to reach St Martin’s without a spare day for cancelled sailings.

Finally, arrive midweek if you can. The domestic weekend is Friday and Saturday, so a Sunday-to-Thursday stay buys you the same beach for meaningfully less money and with a fraction of the people on it.

Itinerary questions

How many days do you need in Cox’s Bazar?+

Four nights is the sweet spot: two beach days, a full Marine Drive day to Inani, and one inland or island morning. Two nights covers the main beach plus Himchari. A week lets you add two nights at Inani and a Teknaf day without rushing.

Where should I stay on a first trip?+

Kolatoli or Sugandha, for all of it. Both are walkable to the sand and to dinner, both sit within an hour of Himchari, Inani, Ramu and the ferry jetty, and neither requires you to move hotels mid-trip.

Is a day trip to St Martin’s Island realistic?+

Not from Cox’s Bazar. The ship leaves from Teknaf, two and a half hours away, in the dry season only, and the crossing is two to three hours each way. Plan a night in Teknaf either side and a spare day for cancellations.

Do I need to book excursions in advance?+

No. Hotel desks and the drivers outside will arrange Himchari, Inani, Ramu, Teknaf and the safari park the day before at a fraction of online prices. Only your room and your long-distance travel need booking ahead.

What is the single biggest planning mistake?+

Too many bases. The district is long and the roads are slow; every hotel change costs a half-day. Pick one base, use it for everything up to four nights, and move at most once on a longer trip.
