Marine Drive is less a destination than a journey. The highway runs 80km south from Cox's Bazar to Teknaf, hugging the Bay of Bengal coastline and threading through green hills. Completed in 2017, it transformed access to Inani and Teknaf but remains underbuilt — expect two lanes, occasional potholes, and no roadside lighting. A handful of small resorts occupy hilltop perches along the route; they charge 50-80 USD per night for rooms with panoramic bay views. Most travellers experience Marine Drive as a day-trip loop: Cox's Bazar to Himchari to Inani to Teknaf and back. The drive takes three to four hours one-way with stops. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular; midday is blinding. Motorbike riders love it; bus passengers endure it.

The road passes small fishing villages, Rohingya camps (off-limits and gated), and stretches of empty beach accessible only by scrambling down embankments. Traffic is light except near Cox's Bazar centre. Trucks and buses dominate; overtaking is aggressive. If you are driving or riding yourself, stay alert. Several viewpoint pullouts exist — the one at 18km south of Himchari offers the best photo angle. No fuel stations exist between Cox's Bazar and Teknaf; fill up before you leave. The resorts along Marine Drive serve as stops for road-trippers rather than multi-night bases. They offer decent views and mediocre food; their value is the isolation, not the amenities.

Where to stay in Marine Drive

Only a few resorts operate directly on Marine Drive. Mermaid Beach Resort (near Himchari) and Sea Pearl Beach Resort's Marine Drive branch are the most established, charging 60-90 USD per night for hilltop rooms with bay views. Expect basic accommodation, intermittent WiFi, and generator power. Food is limited to hotel restaurants serving standard Bangladeshi-Chinese fare at inflated prices. These resorts work best for one-night stays during a longer Cox's Bazar trip; they do not offer enough activity or dining variety for a full holiday. Book ahead in winter peak season; outside December-February, walk-in bargaining can save 20 percent.

Things to do in Marine Drive

Full Marine Drive motorbike ride to Teknaf
Rent a 150cc motorbike in Cox's Bazar (600-800 taka per day) and ride the full 80km to Teknaf. Start at 7am, stop at Himchari, Inani, and a few viewpoints. The ride takes four hours one-way with stops. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses; the sun reflects hard off the bay. Fuel up in Cox's Bazar or Teknaf. Return by 5pm before light fades. This is Cox's Bazar's best motorbike route and wildly popular with Bengali bikers.
Sunrise photography at the 18km viewpoint
The pullout 18km south of Himchari offers an elevated view over the highway curve and the bay. Arrive at 5:45am for sunrise. The light hits the water and hills beautifully for about twenty minutes. Bring a tripod if you have one; the shoulder is wide enough. After sunrise, vendors sell tea and biscuits. The same viewpoint is decent at sunset but morning light is superior.
Beach scramble near Dakhinpara village
At roughly 22km south of Himchari, a dirt track leads down the embankment to a small unnamed beach. Park carefully and descend on foot — the slope is steep. The beach is 200 metres of sand, usually empty, with fishing boats and trash but also genuine solitude. Not swimmable due to rocks and current. Good for photos and silence. Scramble back up and continue south. This is not marked; ask locals for "Dakhinpara beach access."
Lunch stop at Bay View Restaurant, Inani
On Marine Drive just before Inani Beach, Bay View Restaurant serves the route's best roadside food — grilled fish, prawn curry, and cold drinks. Expect 500-700 taka per person. The outdoor terrace overlooks the bay. It is busy on weekends with road-trippers but turns over quickly. Open 10am to 9pm. The toilet is acceptable by Bangladesh roadside standards — use it; the next clean option is Teknaf.
Signature walk · 1.4 km
Hilltop resort to beach descent

If staying at Mermaid or Sea Pearl Marine Drive branch, a steep footpath descends from the resort grounds to a small beach below. Start at the resort garden; look for stone steps leading downhill. The descent is about 700 metres and drops 80 metres in elevation. The path is uneven and slippery after rain. At the bottom, a narrow beach extends 500 metres south. Walk it, then climb back up the same path. The round trip takes forty-five minutes to an hour. Do not attempt after rain or near dark; the path has no lighting and footing is treacherous.

Getting there & around Marine Drive

Marine Drive is not a public-transport route in the conventional sense. Shared jeeps from Cox's Bazar to Teknaf travel the highway (80-100 taka, 2 hours) but do not stop for sightseeing. To experience Marine Drive properly, hire a private car (3000-4000 taka for a full-day loop with stops), rent a motorbike (600-800 taka per day), or join a group tour. Most Cox's Bazar hotels arrange Marine Drive day trips. CNGs do not operate long-distance; they are town vehicles only. If staying at a Marine Drive resort, pre-arrange transport with the hotel; you cannot flag down taxis here. Mobile signal is weak along much of the route; plan ahead.

Good to know

Is Marine Drive dangerous to drive or ride?
It is more challenging than Western highways but not exceptionally dangerous by Bangladesh standards. The road is two lanes, mostly paved, with some potholes and gravel patches. Traffic is light except near towns. Buses and trucks pass aggressively; motorbike riders should stay alert and avoid overtaking on blind curves. Landslides are rare but possible during heavy monsoon rain; avoid riding July-August if you are risk-averse. The bigger danger is sun and dehydration — bring water and wear a helmet.
Can I stop anywhere along Marine Drive to access the beach?
Technically yes, but access is difficult. Most of the highway runs along a raised embankment; the beach is 5-10 metres below and often backed by rocks or cliffs. A few dirt tracks descend to the beach near villages; ask locals or watch for motorcycle tire marks on the shoulder. Do not leave valuables in a parked vehicle — theft is uncommon but not impossible. The best beach access points are at Himchari, Inani, and near Dakhinpara village.
