Marine Drive is less a destination than a journey. The highway runs 80km south from Cox's Bazar to Teknaf, hugging the Bay of Bengal coastline and threading through green hills. Completed in 2017, it transformed access to Inani and Teknaf but remains underbuilt — expect two lanes, occasional potholes, and no roadside lighting. A handful of small resorts occupy hilltop perches along the route; they charge 50-80 USD per night for rooms with panoramic bay views. Most travellers experience Marine Drive as a day-trip loop: Cox's Bazar to Himchari to Inani to Teknaf and back. The drive takes three to four hours one-way with stops. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular; midday is blinding. Motorbike riders love it; bus passengers endure it.
The road passes small fishing villages, Rohingya camps (off-limits and gated), and stretches of empty beach accessible only by scrambling down embankments. Traffic is light except near Cox's Bazar centre. Trucks and buses dominate; overtaking is aggressive. If you are driving or riding yourself, stay alert. Several viewpoint pullouts exist — the one at 18km south of Himchari offers the best photo angle. No fuel stations exist between Cox's Bazar and Teknaf; fill up before you leave. The resorts along Marine Drive serve as stops for road-trippers rather than multi-night bases. They offer decent views and mediocre food; their value is the isolation, not the amenities.
Only a few resorts operate directly on Marine Drive. Mermaid Beach Resort (near Himchari) and Sea Pearl Beach Resort's Marine Drive branch are the most established, charging 60-90 USD per night for hilltop rooms with bay views. Expect basic accommodation, intermittent WiFi, and generator power. Food is limited to hotel restaurants serving standard Bangladeshi-Chinese fare at inflated prices. These resorts work best for one-night stays during a longer Cox's Bazar trip; they do not offer enough activity or dining variety for a full holiday. Book ahead in winter peak season; outside December-February, walk-in bargaining can save 20 percent.
If staying at Mermaid or Sea Pearl Marine Drive branch, a steep footpath descends from the resort grounds to a small beach below. Start at the resort garden; look for stone steps leading downhill. The descent is about 700 metres and drops 80 metres in elevation. The path is uneven and slippery after rain. At the bottom, a narrow beach extends 500 metres south. Walk it, then climb back up the same path. The round trip takes forty-five minutes to an hour. Do not attempt after rain or near dark; the path has no lighting and footing is treacherous.
All walking routesMarine Drive is not a public-transport route in the conventional sense. Shared jeeps from Cox's Bazar to Teknaf travel the highway (80-100 taka, 2 hours) but do not stop for sightseeing. To experience Marine Drive properly, hire a private car (3000-4000 taka for a full-day loop with stops), rent a motorbike (600-800 taka per day), or join a group tour. Most Cox's Bazar hotels arrange Marine Drive day trips. CNGs do not operate long-distance; they are town vehicles only. If staying at a Marine Drive resort, pre-arrange transport with the hotel; you cannot flag down taxis here. Mobile signal is weak along much of the route; plan ahead.
