Street food in Cox's Bazar is generally safe if you follow two rules: eat only from stalls with high turnover (long queues mean fresh food), and avoid anything that sits at room temperature for hours. Fried and grilled items cooked to order are safest. Pre-cut fruit, salads, and creamy desserts are risky. Bring hand sanitizer and use it before eating. Most vendors do not speak English; point at what you want and they will serve it. Expect to pay $0.50-2 per item. Peak eating hours are 6-9 PM when the stalls set up along Marine Drive and near the beaches.
The nine dishes below are the most iconic. Try them in order of personal adventurousness. Start with familiar flavors (samosas, kebabs) and work toward the intense stuff (shutki, panta bhat). Vendors cluster near Laboni Point, the Kolatoli beachfront, and the main market on Station Road.
One: Bhuna khichuri, a spiced rice-and-lentil porridge sold from big pots near the fish market. Comforting, filling, safe. Two: Shingara (Bengali samosas), fried to order, stuffed with spiced potatoes or minced meat. Best stall is near Hotel Sea Crown. Three: Chotpoti, a chickpea and potato salad with tamarind and chili. The vendor at Laboni Point has the best version. Four: Jhalmuri, puffed rice tossed with mustard oil, chilies, onions, and peanuts. A beach classic, sold by roaming vendors for $0.30. Five: Fried hilsa fish, the national fish of Bangladesh, grilled fresh at sunset. Expensive for street food ($3) but worth it.
Six: Fuchka (pani puri), crispy shells filled with spiced water and tamarind. Only eat from busy stalls where the water is made fresh hourly. Seven: Sheek kebab, minced beef or chicken on skewers, grilled over charcoal. The stall near Marine Drive mosque is excellent. Eight: Shutki bhorta, fermented dried fish mashed with chilies and onions. Smells like death, tastes incredible if you can handle funk. Nine: Panta bhat, fermented rice soaked overnight, served with fried chilies and salt. A village dish rarely seen in cities. One vendor near the main market serves it; ask locals to point you there.
