Best sunset spots in Cox's Bazar, ranked

We shot 40 sunsets from 12 locations to rank the 7 best vantage points by color, crowds, and photo angles.

Why the sunsets here deliver

Cox's Bazar faces west across the Bay of Bengal, so the sun sets directly over the water. The flat coastal plain means unobstructed horizon views. Dry season (November-February) offers the most dramatic colors because pollution and dust particles scatter light into deep oranges and reds. Monsoon sunsets are muted and often obscured by clouds. The best time to arrive is 30 minutes before sunset; the light show starts early and you want to claim your spot before the crowds pile in.

All seven spots below are free to access except one. Bring a tripod if you are serious about photography; the wind off the ocean makes handheld shots tricky. The peak color window lasts only 10-15 minutes, so be ready.

The 7 ranked

One: The rocks at Inani Beach. The coral formations create foreground interest, the beach is less crowded, and the golden sand reflects the light beautifully. Get there by 5 PM to explore tide pools while you wait. Two: Sugandha Point, the western end of Sugandha Beach. Wide-open sky, gentle surf, fewer hawkers than Laboni. Three: Marine Drive promenade between Kolatoli and Laboni. You can walk and watch, stopping wherever the light looks best. Four: The terrace at Sayeman Sky Lounge (hotel rooftop bar). Elevated view, cold beer in hand, no sand in your shoes. Only option with a cover charge ($10 minimum spend).

Five: Himchari Beach near the national park entrance. Forested headlands frame the sun as it drops. Six: Laboni Point, the classic postcard spot. It delivers on color but you will share it with 500 people. Seven: The fishing jetty at Kalatali. Boats silhouetted against the sun, working fishermen hauling nets. Great for candid shots but the smell of drying fish is intense.

Questions, answered

Can you see the sun actually touch the water?
Yes, if the horizon is clear. Haze or distant storms sometimes obscure the final moment. November through January has the clearest evenings. Monsoon season often has cloud banks on the horizon that block the last 10 degrees.
What is the worst sunset spot?
Anywhere along the main hotel strip in Kolatoli. The buildings block sightlines and the beach there faces slightly north, so the sun sets off to the left rather than straight ahead. Walk ten minutes south to Laboni or north to Sugandha for better views.
