Uber withdrew from Bangladesh in 2016. The dominant ride-hailing app is Pathao, which operates in Cox's Bazar with CNG auto-rickshaws and motorbike taxis. Download the app, link a card or use cash, and request rides like Uber. Fares are metered and typically 20-30% cheaper than haggling with street CNGs. Coverage is good in Kolatoli, Laboni, and Sugandha, but patchy in Himchari and nonexistent south of Inani. Traditional CNGs are everywhere; flag one down, negotiate the fare before boarding. Expect to pay $0.50 for short hops within town, $2-3 for Kolatoli to Sugandha, $5-8 for longer trips to Himchari.
Pathao also offers motorbike rides (called Pathao Bike), faster and cheaper than CNGs but you ride pillion with a helmet. Fares run about 40% less than CNG. This is the best option for solo travelers without much luggage. For groups of three or four, a metered CNG through Pathao or a negotiated private hire makes more sense.
Use Pathao for short predictable trips during the day: hotel to restaurant, beach to market, anything within the main tourist zone. The app shows the fare upfront, drivers cannot scam you, and you avoid the exhausting haggling ritual. Use traditional CNGs for early morning or late night when Pathao drivers are offline, or for trips outside the coverage area like Teknaf or Ramu. Negotiate hard: start at half the first quoted price and meet in the middle. For full-day hire, skip Pathao entirely and arrange a CNG through your hotel for $15-20 including waiting time.
Motorbike taxis on Pathao are the fastest option in heavy traffic, which clogs Marine Drive every evening 5-7 PM. If you need to get from Laboni to Kolatoli quickly, request a bike. Do not use motorbikes in the rain; the roads are slick and crashes are common. For airport transfers (Cox's Bazar Airport is 3 km from Kolatoli), Pathao is reliable and costs $2-3 versus $5-8 for a negotiated CNG.
