Cox's Bazar to Dhaka: every transport option ranked

We tested all 5 ways to reach Dhaka and ranked them by speed, comfort, safety, and cost over 8 round trips.

The distance and general options

Cox's Bazar to Dhaka is 400 km, theoretically a six-hour drive but realistically 8-10 hours due to traffic, road conditions, and ferry crossings. You have five options: fly (fastest), luxury bus (most popular), train (slowest but scenic), private car hire, or shared microbus. Flight takes 50 minutes gate-to-gate but airport transfers add 90 minutes on each end. Bus is overnight, arriving in Dhaka at dawn. Train is a new option as of 2024, running three days per week. Private car costs triple the bus but lets you stop for photos. Shared microbuses are unsafe; avoid them.

We rank the five by overall experience, factoring in cost, time, comfort, and whether you arrive functional or destroyed. If you have flexibility, the answer is always fly. If you are on a budget, the overnight bus is tolerable. Train is only for rail enthusiasts.

The 5 ranked

One: Fly on US-Bangla or Novoair. Tickets cost $60-90 one-way if booked two weeks ahead. Forty-minute flight, comfortable, safe. Cox's Bazar Airport is tiny and efficient. Land at Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal, then taxi or Uber to your destination. Total door-to-door: four hours. Two: Luxury bus with Greenline, Sohag, or Hanif. Sleeper berths or reclining seats, AC, one meal stop, $12-18 one-way. Departs Cox's Bazar 9 PM, arrives Dhaka 6 AM. You will not sleep well but it is bearable. Book the upper deck for less engine noise.

Three: Private car hire through your hotel, $120-150 for the full trip with driver. You control stops, take photos at scenic points, and arrive fresh. Split among four people it is affordable. Four: Train on the Cox's Bazar-Dhaka express, runs Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. Ten hours, second-class seat $8, first-class $15. Scenery through hill country and tea estates is lovely but the train is slow and crowded. Five: Shared microbus, which tourists should never take. Overloaded, reckless driving, frequent breakdowns. Costs $8 but not worth the risk.

Questions, answered

Is the overnight bus safe?
Mostly. The big operators (Greenline, Sohag) maintain their fleets and hire experienced drivers. Accidents happen but are rare. The bigger issue is petty theft; keep your bags locked and valuables on your person. Women traveling solo report feeling safe on the upper deck where families sit.
Can you break up the drive with an overnight stop?
Yes. Chittagong is halfway and has decent hotels. Hire a private car, stop in Chittagong for lunch and sightseeing, overnight there, then continue to Dhaka the next day. This adds cost but makes the journey pleasant rather than an endurance test.
