Dulahazara Safari Park is Bangladesh's first and only safari park, located 50km south of Cox's Bazar near the town of Chakaria. The park covers 900 hectares of forested hills and houses Bengal tigers, lions, bears, deer, crocodiles, and various birds. It is not a true safari in the African sense — animals are in large enclosures, not roaming free. Visitors tour by private car or rented park vehicle, stopping at viewing points to photograph animals through fences. Entry costs 300 taka for foreigners, 50 taka for Bangladeshis. The park is popular with Bengali families on weekends; weekdays are quieter. A visit takes three to four hours. Overnight accommodation exists at Dulahazara Safari Park Resort but is poor quality and rarely necessary. Most visitors day-trip from Cox's Bazar or stop en route to Teknaf.

The park's Bengal tigers are the main attraction; the breeding program has successfully raised several cubs. Lions, imported from Africa, look depressed in the heat. Bears pace their enclosures. Deer roam semi-freely in a large paddock. The birdlife is decent — eagles, storks, and kingfishers if you are patient. Facilities are basic — a small museum, a canteen selling fried snacks, and a children's playground. Do not expect Western zoo standards. Enclosures are adequate but not spacious. The park is green, shaded, and a pleasant break from beach monotony if you have children or a wildlife interest. If you are indifferent to captive animals, skip Dulahazara and spend the day at Inani Beach instead.

Where to stay in Dulahazara

Dulahazara Safari Park Resort is the only accommodation, located inside the park grounds. Rooms cost 35-60 USD per night and quality is mediocre — dated furniture, erratic electricity, and poor WiFi. The restaurant serves basic Bengali food. Most visitors do not stay overnight; the park visit takes half a day and Cox's Bazar or Chakaria are both nearby. If you must stay, book online or at the park entrance. Off-season rates drop but so does maintenance quality. Bring snacks and bottled water; park canteen options are limited.

Things to do in Dulahazara

Tiger enclosure viewing at Dulahazara Safari Park
The Bengal tiger enclosure is the park's highlight. View from designated platforms while tigers rest in shade or pace the fence line. Feeding times (11am and 4pm) are more active but crowded with local tourists. The park has four adult tigers and several cubs; sightings are reliable. Bring binoculars for better views. Do not tap the fence or shout; guards will eject you. Spend twenty to thirty minutes here.
Drive through the safari circuit
Rent a park vehicle (1500-2000 taka per vehicle for the full circuit) or drive your own car through the safari loop. The route is about 8km and takes ninety minutes with stops. You will pass deer paddocks, crocodile ponds, bear enclosures, and bird aviaries. The track is rough in places; drive slowly. Photography is allowed. This is the core park experience; everything else is secondary.
Picnic lunch at the park's shaded rest area
A designated picnic area near the park canteen has tables and benches under trees. Bring your own food — the canteen sells only fried chicken, chips, and soft drinks. Local families spread blankets and eat rice, curry, and fruit. It is a pleasant spot for a break after touring the enclosures. No alcohol allowed. Litter bins are provided; use them.
Birdwatching along the forest trail
A short walking trail loops through forest near the park entrance. Early morning (7am to 9am) is best for birdwatching — look for barbets, drongos, and sunbirds. The trail is about 1.5km and takes thirty minutes. Bring binoculars and insect repellent. The trail is uneven; wear sturdy shoes. This is the only part of the park you explore on foot; the rest is vehicle-only.

Dulahazara forest walking trail

Start at the park entrance near the ticket office. Follow signs for the nature trail into the forest. The path is dirt and gravel, winding through teak and bamboo groves. At 500 metres you reach a small observation tower; climb for a view over the canopy. Continue the loop, which brings you back to the entrance area. The walk takes thirty to forty minutes. Do it early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat. Bring water; no vendors exist on the trail.

Getting there & around Dulahazara

Dulahazara is 50km south of Cox's Bazar, 20km south of Chakaria, and 30km north of Teknaf. Buses between Cox's Bazar and Teknaf pass the park entrance; ask to be dropped at "Safari Park" (70-80 taka from Cox's Bazar, one hour). CNGs from Cox's Bazar charge 1200-1500 taka for a round trip including waiting time. Many visitors hire a private car for the day (2500-3000 taka) and combine Dulahazara with stops at Himchari and Inani. Within the park, you drive or rent a park vehicle; walking is limited to the short forest trail. Return buses to Cox's Bazar pass the entrance hourly until 5pm.

Good to know

Is Dulahazara Safari Park worth visiting?
If you are travelling with children or have a wildlife interest, yes. The Bengal tigers are impressive and the park is greener and quieter than the crowded beaches. If you are solo, uninterested in captive animals, or short on time, skip it. The park is not world-class but it is Bangladesh's best wildlife attraction. A half-day visit works well as a break from beach days or as a stop en route to Teknaf. Do not expect African safari levels; expect a regional zoo in a forested setting.
Can I walk around Dulahazara Safari Park on foot?
Only the short nature trail near the entrance is walkable. The main safari circuit is vehicle-only for safety and distance reasons. If you do not have a car, rent a park vehicle (1500-2000 taka) or join a shared vehicle with other visitors. Walking the circuit is prohibited. The park is large and animals are in separate enclosures; walking is impractical and unsafe.
