What to do in Cox's Bazar when it rains

Monsoon downpours or off-season rain can trap you indoors for 6 hours; here are 8 activities that actually work.

How to prepare for rain days

Cox's Bazar gets hammered during monsoon (June-September), with daily afternoon thunderstorms dumping 50-100mm in two hours. Even in dry season, surprise rain can kill a beach day. Most hotels lack indoor entertainment; expect a bed, a TV with three channels, and maybe slow WiFi. The city has no museums, cinemas show only Bangla films, and malls are grim. Your best bet is food, cafes, and low-key exploration between squalls.

The eight activities below assume you are stuck for a half or full day. None require advance booking. All are indoors or rain-tolerant. Bring an umbrella and waterproof bag for your phone; Cox's Bazar floods fast and drainage is poor.

The 8 rainy-day rescues

One: Multi-hour cafe session at Cafe Al-Baik or Julies. Order breakfast, work on your laptop, order lunch, read a book. WiFi and AC make it tolerable. Two: Spa treatment at a hotel. Sayeman wellness center does massages, facials, and body scrubs. Book a 90-minute package for $35 and kill the afternoon. Three: Cooking class. A few hotels offer Bengali cooking demos; ask your front desk. Learn to make hilsa curry or pithas. Four: The local fish market at dawn (5-7 AM). It operates rain or shine, under tarps. Fascinating chaos, incredible photo ops, pungent smells.

Five: Long lunch at Mermaid Café or Jhawban. Order the tasting menu, linger over coffee, wait out the storm. Six: Hotel pool if your accommodation has one. Warm rain and a heated pool is actually pleasant. Seven: Shopping for textiles at the Burmese Market (despite the name, it is local goods). Bargain for lungis, scarves, and beachwear. Eight: Hire a guide for an indoor talk about local history and Rohingya crisis context. Some hotels arrange this; agree a rate ($15-20 for two hours) and learn something.

Questions, answered

Can you go to the beach in the rain?
Light drizzle is fine; the beach empties and you get solitude. Heavy rain brings lightning, which is extremely dangerous on open sand. Flash floods turn parts of the beach into rivers. If you hear thunder, get off the beach immediately.
Do restaurants close when it rains?
Small beachfront stalls shut down. Hotel restaurants and indoor places like Mermaid, Panshi, and EFC stay open. Delivery apps (Foodpanda, Pathao Food) operate but expect delays. Stock up on snacks from a minimart if a big storm is forecast.
