Cox's Bazar on a $50 a day budget

We tested a concrete 24-hour plan spending exactly $48 covering sleep, food, transport, and one major activity.

Accommodation and breakfast

Start by booking a fan room at Hotel Oporajita on Station Road, $12 per night if you book direct (avoid Booking.com markup). The room is clean enough, private bathroom with bucket shower, ten-minute walk to Laboni Beach. Check in at 2 PM, drop bags, and walk to Jhorna Restaurant across the street for breakfast: paratha, egg curry, and cha for $1.50. Total so far: $13.50.

At 9 AM catch a shared CNG auto-rickshaw to Himchari Beach, $0.50 per person. Entry to Himchari National Park is $2. Hike the waterfall trail (free) for two hours, swim in the pool. Bring snacks from a shop because there are no cafés inside. Budget $3 for bottled water and biscuits. Return CNG to Kolatoli by 1 PM, another $0.50. Running total: $19.50.

Afternoon and evening

Lunch at Panshi Restaurant on Kolatoli Road: fish curry, rice, dal, vegetable, and a Coke for $4. Rest at the hotel during the hottest hours. At 4 PM walk to Laboni Beach and rent a beach chair for $1 (negotiate). Watch sunset, ignore the hawkers. At 6 PM head to EFC on Marine Drive for dinner: grilled pomfret, fried rice, salad, two bottles of water, $10. This is your splurge meal. Total food and activity: $15.

Evening stroll along Marine Drive, which is free and well-lit. Stop at Cafe Al-Baik for dessert: falooda for $2. Return to hotel by 9 PM. Final tally: $12 room, $1.50 breakfast, $1 morning transport, $2 park entry, $3 snacks, $0.50 return transport, $4 lunch, $1 beach chair, $10 dinner, $2 dessert, $1 buffer for tips and incidentals. Total: $48. You have $2 left for morning coffee.

Questions, answered

Can you go cheaper than this?
Yes, if you eat only at local shops (rice and curry for $1.50 per meal) and skip Himchari in favor of just walking Laboni Beach. A dormitory bed at Cox's Backpackers costs $5. You could realistically spend $25-30 per day but comfort drops significantly.
What does this budget not cover?
Alcohol, which is hard to find and expensive when available. Scuba diving or parasailing, both $30+. Any shopping beyond basics. Western-style breakfast. AC rooms, which start at $25. This is a bare-minimum active day, not luxury.
