Best day trips from Cox's Bazar, ranked

We tested 9 day-trip routes from the city and ranked the top 6 by scenery, logistics, and whether they beat just staying at the beach.

Why you might want to leave

After three days on Cox's Bazar beaches, the sameness sets in. The water is murky, the sand looks identical for miles, and the crowds are relentless on weekends. The surrounding region offers river cruises, hill stations, islands, and wildlife sanctuaries within 90 minutes. Most day trips require hiring a CNG or private car for $15-30 including waiting time. Public transport exists but is slow and inconvenient. Pack your own lunch for most destinations because food options are limited to village tea stalls.

We rank the six best by payoff relative to effort. All are doable in under 12 hours from a Kolatoli hotel base. Number one is a no-brainer; number six is only worth it if you have already exhausted the top five.

The 6 ranked

One: Maheshkhali Island via ferry from Gorokghata, 12 km north. The ferry takes 30 minutes ($1 return), then you hire a motorbike or CNG on the island. Visit Adinath Temple on the hilltop, explore the salt flats, have lunch at a family guesthouse. Total cost $8 plus lunch. Full day, home by 6 PM. Two: Himchari National Park and waterfall. Hire a CNG for $6 round-trip, hike the forest trail, swim in the pool, picnic at the beach. Three: Dulahazara Safari Park. Bengal tigers, elephants, and deer from a guided bus. Takes half a day, $12 all-in.

Four: Ramu Buddhist temple circuit. Six hilltop monasteries over 10 km, hire a motorbike for $6, bring a packed lunch. Cultural rather than scenic. Five: Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary. Requires a guide and permit ($20 total), full-day trek through primary forest, wildlife sightings not guaranteed. For serious hikers only. Six: Sonadia Island. Reachable by boat from Teknaf (90 km south), pristine beaches but the logistics eat your whole day. Only worth it if you overnight on the island.

Questions, answered

Can you do any of these by public transport?
Maheshkhali is easy via public ferry and local transport. Himchari and Dulahazara are doable via shared CNGs but you waste time waiting. Teknaf and Sonadia require private hire because public transport does not align with tourist schedules. Budget an extra two hours each way if going public.
Which day trip has the best food?
Maheshkhali Island. Several family-run guesthouses serve fresh seafood curries and rice for $3-5. Ramu has basic dal-bhat. Himchari and Dulahazara have snack stalls only. Teknaf has nothing; bring your own supplies.
